Hello!
my name is Thorsten Oberbossel. I was born 1970 in a town named Haan near Wuppertal.
When I was a three-month old baby, physicians found out that I have Glaucoma, an eye disease which leads to blindness. So my life started in a way which can't be called normal, but my parents took the challenge to bring me up as normally as possible.
At the age of 6 years I went to the primary boarding school for blind children in Düren, a town located in the region of Cologne. There I spent the first 8 years of my school time under cold and hyperauthoritarian conditions. Dueren contained many facilities for learning and spare-time, but it was surrounded by fences to make sure that the pupils are totally protected. To compensate the cold atmosphere I developed a great amount of imaginationand liked to play adventure stories with my friends. There I aknoledged my fascination for science-fiction stories and created my own first heroes of Sci-Fi.
1984, at the age of 14, I changed school and came to Marburg's Grammar school for blind and visually handicaped. There I learned to manage my own life without any protection and learned all which was needed to get the abitur Graduade. I also learned to play keyboard in Marburg and developed a great sppectrum of interests, especially in nature science researches. So it was a small step for my to decide to begin a study of biology after the 7 years of Grammar school. The studies are over and I'm looking for a sorce of income which suits my abilities and interests.
Thanks to my parents that my life as a blind person is free of anyoverprotective restrictions, so that I could do the things I wanted to do. So I achieved it to travel many times without any assisting person, for example to Scotland, Ireland and Malta to combine a wonderful holliday time with the improvement of my spoken English. Unfortunately my writing abilities are not much well developed, but I think that the most important thing is to express your opinion and requests. In this case the access to the worldwide internet gave me the key to a source of information and communication I never had before. But I know that that's normal, because everyone who gets access to the internet has these possibilities.
I hope that I didn't bore you too much with this short document. If you want to know more about me, please leave me a message.
